All Good All Round

The mast is pretty well done, all shaped and smoothed.

In an earlier post I had some pics of knot removal. Here is how that looks once the mast was shaped.

Overall I’m pretty happy with my mast. Though looking at photos online of other Stirven masts I note they are much tighter grained. I hope this wont be a problem with my mast! I’m banking on the fact that it’s laminated to compensate for any short comings in my timber stock. It’s built now so all I gotta do is use it to find out…

  1. Dear Mike, Hello from a fellow Stir Ven builder in Florida, USA. Building my mast now (using a different approach) and was wondering if you had weighed yours?

    Thanks, Walt

PS, your timber looks fine to me, even with the knot.

    • Hi Walt,

Glad to hear from another Stirven builder.
I weighed the mast last night, it came in at 20kg or 44lb without fittings.
I’m not sure if that is good or bad, I wasn’t daring enough to stray from the construction method in the plans.
I’d like to hear more about your build (how are you building the mast?). Have you finished the hull etc etc.

I’m about to fit the garboards over the next couple of days, I’ll be doing a post on that soon.

      Nice to hear from you.

      Thanks
      Mike Randall
